How To Make Hamster Treats At Home

In the previous article you became familiar with hamster diet. The best hamster treats are those we make ourselves using fresh fruit and vegetables. Shop alternatives could be great, in case they’re not full of sugar. If you are interested in cooking something for your hamster, you can make some sweet small cookies. If you have the time and inclination, then do it. It is fun and you have the power to control the ingredients. It’s important that you don’t just combine random mixes together as this can interfere with the overall nutritional value.  You don’t want something that is too high or too low in fiber, protein or fat.

Here are some recipes to make hamster treats at home:

1. Cookies
The ingredients are:

  • a cup of powdered milk
  • a cup of wheat germ
  • half a cup of oats
  • One egg white
  • 100-gram jar of berry baby food

Mix all the ingredients and add some water to get sticky dough. Then make small pellets. Put the pieces on a lightly oiled sheet and bake them at 350-degrees. It will take about 8 minutes because they are tiny. Keep the cookies in an airtight container or a freezer-safe container in the freezer.
You can change the recipe by using other kinds of baby food (except for onion or garlic) or replacing the baby food with smaller chunks of fruits and vegetables. Remember to use the fruits and veggies that were approved of in the previous article.

2. Crunchy Honey Delights
Ingredients:

  • Cheerios (sugar-free kind)
  • Sesame Seeds
  • Honey
  • Oats

Directions: First, Add sesame seeds and oats. Then crush the cheerios in a dish. Small pieces are perfect. Add them to the sesame seeds and oats and mix together. Drizzle honey over the mixture. Mold the mixture into small balls that your hamster can have.
Put them on a baking tray and into the fridge for 15 minutes. Heat your oven to 190 degrees and bake them for 8-10 minutes and then let them become cool. Now give the treat to your hammy and see if it likes it.

3. Sesame Seed Muffins
Though it is called sesame seed muffins, you can generally DIY them with any of the hamster favorite fruits, nuts and vegetables.
Ingredients:

  • A handful of sesame seeds
  • ½ grated apple
  • ½ grated banana
  • 2 eggs

Preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. This is crucial as you are using eggs in your ingredient. You have to make sure that they are cooked well.
Beat your eggs till the whites are fully mixed with the yolks. Mix the grated vegetables and sesame seeds together. Put some muffin cases into a muffin tray and scoop in around one tablespoon of your veggie/sesame mixture.
Pour the beaten eggs into the trays. They have to cover the veggies. Do not pour the mixture up to the cup since it will puff up when it is baked. In 15-20 minutes your muffins will be ready. At the end let your muffins cool. Feed your hamster just a small piece per day.

4. Hamster cookie
It is another kind of cookie. Since it contains peanut butter, hamsters love it.
Ingredients:

  •  ¼ cup oats
  • 3    tbs water
  • 1 tsp peanut butter
  • 2½ tbs whole-wheat flour

Preheat your oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit. Mix water and flour. Add in the oats and peanut butter. Knead the dough with your hands. Make use of a bit more of flour if your mixture sounds sticky. Then roll the dough into little balls. You can be creative and make different shapes with the dough. Line a baking tray with parchment paper. Let them bake for 18 minutes. Let them cool for some minutes.

There are also some hamster treats which are very easy to mix. Most of the ingredients are handy and you can DIY them easily. Let's see some of them.

5. Cereal mixture with spelt
200 g cereal mixture with spelt: Millet, barley, oats and rye are great.

6. 100 g bird feed / small seeds:

Sugar-free budgie food with a bit poppy seeds and rice are suitable. Different kinds of millet and herb seeds could be included too.

7. 100 g multi-grain flakes or multi-grain muesli:

Sugar-free mueslis with multi-grain flakes are well suited. They generally consist of oat flakes, wheat flakes, barley flakes and rye flakes. Rice flakes could be used too. Sugar-free corn flakes are popular as well.

8. 100 g dry vegetables:

broccoli, zucchini, carrot chips, parsnips, celery cubes and beetroot cubes are a good offer.

9. 100 g herbal mixture:

dry herbs are needed in a balanced diet. Hamsters have different tastes. Some prefer dried flowers such as sunflower petals, chamomile flowers and marigolds and some of them like green cereals such as green oats and others prefer herbs such as dandelions, lemon balm, yarrow and ribwort. It is your job to identify your hamster's taste.

10. 50 g nuts / kernels:

Sunflower seeds, hazelnuts and walnuts are offered as fat suppliers. Do not feed your hamster a large quantity of nuts. They contain fat and eating lots of them cause obesity.

11. 50 g mixture:

in order to make your hamster food more appealing, you can mix pea flakes, corn flakes and rice flakes into the feed.
Hint: if your hamster does not eat certain ingredients, leave them out. Some hamsters do not like dried herbs, but they regularly eat fresh food and in summer fresh grass and herbs. Thus leave out dried herbs. If the creature eats certain components, then add more of them to the feed.
Exception: do not add too many fatty components. They are not healthy for hamsters.
Attention: if you bring a hamster home for the first time, do not try to change its diet at once. Do not risk your hamster health. This may cause stomach troubles. Gradually introduce new foods to the creature.
